Art Start's Family Portrait Project Photographs Homeless Families in New York City

Art Start is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in New York City that offers creative workshops to kids that are in city shelters, on the streets, are involved in court cases, or surviving with parents in crisis. Their Family Portrait Project uses family portraits and story-telling to actively shift the focus on homeless families by celebrating their strength and unity throughout difficult times.

Art Start believes that this process of defining, envisioning, and actually seeing their images can profoundly transform youth––their confidence, their optimism, their direction and the way they interact with the world.
