In a neighborhood starved for more healthy and chill restaurants, Midtown East/Murray Hill has a new poke spot in a refreshing addition to the area. Headlining the menu at Sons of Thunder are its poke bowls for those looking for a healthy meal, as well as creamy organic shakes and soft serves for those looking for a treat.
Dining-in also has a bonus of enjoying a mix of Hawaiian and West Coast vibes with a spacious sunlit dining area in the back, complete with overhanging fairy lights, a definite step above many other fast casual restaurants in terms of character and comfort.
For the uninitiated, poke is a salad originally from Hawaii made with raw fish, usually seasoned with Asian ingredients such as soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onions. Think of sashimi as a base for Asian ceviche. Sons of Thunder serves their poke in a bowl with your choice of white rice, brown rice, or warm tortilla chips along with greens and seaweed salad topped off with shoyu or a spicy mayo. Each standard poke bowl starts at $10.75, with additional toppings that include avocado, edamame, nori, krispies, and seasonal options.
I recommend going half-and-half with ahi tuna and tako octopus, then adding avocado. Both are tasty on their own and go well with the other ingredients for a light lunch or dinner with complex flavors.
Sons of Thunder also dishes out creamy soft serves (the swirl is on point), milkshakes, hot dogs (I recommend the Banh Mi Dog), as well as craft beer, wine, and sake. Burgers and fries are coming soon according to the “Eagerly anticipating gas service” note on their menu board.
Recommended for poke lovers, those looking for some West Coast cuisine, or just breaking out of the Just Salad and Chopt rotation when looking for healthier options in the Midtown East / Murray Hill area.
