The Pudú is the world's smallest species of deer. Native to South America, the two types of Pudú deer are classified as a near-threatened and vulnerable species due to deforestation and poaching. Led by the Wildlife Conservation Society, conservation efforts at the Queens Zoo have led to four fawns in the past five years. Take a peek at the most recent newborn pudú in these adorable photographs from WCS.
The fawn was born on May 17 and is male. The white spots, characteristic to newborns of many deer species, will fade and disappear as the fawn gets older. He will grow quickly, but will only be approximately 12-14 inches tall as an adult.
