Photographer and videographer Lowell Brown recently uploaded this great video from 2002 showing a continuous shot outside of a moving A train as the subway moves from station to station. In a world where video recording via cell phone was not yet inventive, this is perhaps one of the first videos of its kind.
In 2002 I became interested in the early film work of the Lumière Brothers—continuous shots of pedestrian scenes. I began making short films with minimal camera movement, live sound and no cuts. I imagined it as a kind of collaboration with circumstance. It seemed like there was a rhythm to everyday interactions, and that if I just listened carefully enough, I would know where to point the camera and when to press record. This piece was shot on a downtown A train in the fall of 2002.
