A cute White-Naped Crane chick made its public debut at the Bronx Zoo this week. With a wild population of only about 6,000 individuals, this vulnerable species is at risk of extinction due to loss of its wetland habitats to agriculture in East Asia.
WCS breeds white-naped cranes and other species as part of the Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program designed to enhance the genetic viability of animal populations in zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Check out the baby chick during normal operating hours at the Bronx Zoo. It can be found on the Northern Ponds, adjacent to the Himalayan Highlands exhibit.
