The Billion Oyster Project is a program in partnership with Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Environmental Protection that has a long term goal of reintroducing a billion live oysters into the once-rich New York Harbor and surrounding waters.
Last month, the project introduced about 50,000 oysters into Jamaica Bay, hopefully starting a first-generation oyster population that will grow exponentially over the next several years. With enough oysters in the waters, New York's water quality will drastically improve.
