A few years ago, our friends over at Mental Floss published an interesting article about the origins of the names of each Brooklyn neighborhood. Most are variations of older Dutch names and locations, a few are of English and Irish origin, and a few are named after people. For instance, here is the origin behind the name "Williamsburg":
This area along the East River was dubbed "Bushwick Shores" before it was purchased in 1802 by real estate investor Richard Woodhull. He named it "Williamsburgh" after Jonathan Williams, the engineer who surveyed the land.
