The New York City blackout of 1977 saw a loss of power to most City residents and businesses, resulting in looting and other criminal activity, including arson.
Caused by a series of lightning strikes at a power station on the Hudson River, the blackout lasted two days until the damage could be repaired safely.
This incredible photograph from the blackout shows a pitch black Manhattan skyline against a colorful sunset sky.
