Essex Crossing is the name of a massive development planned in the Lower East Side that hopes to bring 1.9 million square feet of affordable housing, commercial opportunities, and vast community spaces.
The nine sites on six acres, commonly known as the Seward Park Extension Urban Renewal Area (SPEURA), have sat mostly vacant since 1967 and represent one of the most significant urban renewal developments in the history of New York City. Phased construction is expected to begin in the late Spring/ early Summer of 2015 and to be completed by 2024.
In this video from the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, learn all about the Essex Crossing project and its impact on the Lower East Side's affordable housing availability.
