The cover of the latest New York Times Magazine looks like a drawing but is actually a massive installation of street art — a 150-foot-tall sidewalk mural on the large triangular plaza where Broadway intersects 23rd St. in Manhattan, just North of the Flatiron Building.
The subject of the mural is New York City-based waiter Elmar Aliyev, a recent immigrant to the City.
For this project, we decided we’d photograph recent immigrants and paste their images on the city’s streets, where they and other immigrants are often invisible. The pasting would be made in the heart of Manhattan, on Flatiron plaza, the triangle of pavement between Fifth Avenue, Broadway and East 23rd Street.
