NeXT Stop Recycles NYC MetroCards and Donates the Rides to New Yorkers in Need

NeXT Stop is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in New York City that seeks to distribute the more than $50 million of unused value left on NYC MetroCards each year.

The NeXT Stop Project recycles MetroCards with remaining value, combines them into full fares, then donates the rides to New Yorkers in need. We partner with outreach organizations like soup kitchens and vocational programs to effectively distribute the cards. We work with their staff to identify their clients who are seeking opportunity and trying to get to their 'next stop' in life. This process ensures proper MetroCard usage and enables us to quantify our impact. So far we have donated 1,103 round-trip MetroCards and 15 monthly cards, used for 250+ job interviews and 150+ medical appointments.

The 100% volunteer organization relies solely on time, money and MetroCard donations to run, and has a new IndieGoGo campaign looking for additional funds to help them expand their distribution base and collection process.

Our goal is $10,000: 50% to donate another 1,000 MetroCards to our Distribution Partners and 50% to produce MetroCard collection boxes. We are a volunteer-based organization and no one on our staff takes a salary - 100% of net proceeds go to the cause.

So far, the campaign has already raised 22% of its modest $10k goal with about 4 weeks left to go. Check out the campaign page to see how you can help.
