First in service in 1904 as part of the original Interborough Rapid Transit Broadway line, the abandoned 91st Street Station was retired in 1959 due to the 96th Street station being extended. The minimal distance between the stations was easily walkable, so the station shuttered. At the time of it's origins though, the 10 block walk between the 86th St and 96th St stations was deemed too far, so they planted a station right in between the two.
You can see the abandoned station today from the 1, 2 or 3 Trains if you look out the window between 86th and 96th, but only if have an eagle eye.
