Staten Island resident and artist Sarah Yuster is known for her urban landscape and portrait paintings. In this short profile video from the Staten Island Advance, learn the story behind how she got her start in the art world.
Growing up in Great Kills in the 1960s, Sarah Yuster spent days romping through woods and frolicking about the lush greenery that existed on the South Shore before builders began rapid development. A self-proclaimed "tomboy" she looked to occupy her time enjoying nature. "I spent my time in the woods, in the marsh, stepping on nails on construction sites," said Yuster. "My greatest loves were the outdoors and the natural sciences. I always thought I'd go into that [the sciences] field."
Yuster, now a long-time West Brighton resident, is largely responsible for putting Staten Island on the map through her artwork. Perhaps the most renown piece is her haunting Victory Boulevard at Dawn landscape depicting a vista of the Twin Towers from a high point on Victory Boulevard in Silver Lake. Now, after living the dream for more than three decades, Yuster is on the forefront of the Staten Island arts scene by selling her work online through her new website.
