Brooklyn resident Summer Rayne Oakes has dedicated her life to health, nature and environment, so it should come as little surprise that her 1,200 foot Williamsburg apartment has nearly every inch filled with about 500 thriving plants.
Oakes has resided in the home (which was previously an industrial building) for 11 years now, and she’s found endless inventive ways to turn it to a haven for flourishing flora. She installed a living wall in the bedroom with a sub-irrigation system connected to the sink to nourish the plants from below; she hung mason jars and pots from planks and plywood on the walls; and she propped miniature greenhouses in her window sills for the things that require more warmth and light. Even the bathroom has become a cozy residence for a diverse tray of succulents, roosting on top of the toilet.
