This great vintage photograph from around 1901 shows Herald Square and its namesake New York Herald newspaper headquarters, along with the old 6th Avenue Elevated Train, several streetcars headed up and down Broadway, and dozens of well-dressed pedestrians. Here is a Google StreetView view of how this same area looks like today from approximately the same angle:
