Uncovering Alice Austen's Original Humans of New York Project Circa 1896

A recent article on Mashable entitled Humans of (Old) New York highlights the photography of Alice Austen, one of the first women photographers to work on street photography. In particular, she liked to focus on random individuals, snap their photograph and write a little bit about them. If this sounds familiar, it is because it is the format used by many since, including the Humans of New York project.

Alice was inseparable from her camera equipment, taking it everywhere on her travels around the U.S. and Europe. The first woman on Staten Island to own a car, Alice took many photographs of her family and society events. Her decision to photograph the ordinary people of New York was unusual for the time.
