The MTA's Arts and Design division manages over 350 musicians and groups in Subway performances across the City with it's Music Under New York program.
Every spring, Music Under New York (MUNY) holds a competition to select new musicians to perform in NYC’s subway system. This year, 70 finalists gathered at Grand Central Terminal to vie for the 20 coveted slots, including Sakinah Iman and the band Alyssa Kayhill and the Night Shift. “What we’re looking for is people that really have something to say, and that are going to inspire people,” says Fred Sherry of the Juilliard School, one of this year’s judges. “It should bring positive energy into the trains.” Part of MTA Arts & Design, the MUNY program brings together 350 solo artists and groups who perform more than 7,500 times annually at 30 subway and train stations.
Be sure to check the Music Under New York page for performance locations and times.
