The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world's longest suspension bridge when it first opened in 1964. The massive 693 foot towers are actually farther apart at the top by 1 and 5/8 inches due to the curvature of the Earth.
In this vintage video dug up by our favorite Staten Island blog This Way on Bay, watch as the archival news reel details the impressive construction of the (then) modern bridge.
The video above shows a handful of random archival footage, showing the Verrazano in various stages of construction. If you can look past the timecode and other annoying titles on screen, it’s interesting to look back at the iconic structure in days gone by. It’s just too bad there’s so little. Like with much old media, time can be devastating. I’m just happy we have this much.
