1924: In the mid-’20s, street cleaners in New York City made regular headline appearances. They threatened to strike; they sued, committed graft and organized; they had dinner, chopped ice and misused funds.

Dec. 8, 1929: Thirty-foot-tall cartoon Katzenjammer Kids marched — or rather, floated — in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to “an unknown destination.” The Katzenjammer Kids was a popular comic strip by Rudolph Dirks (later joined by Harold H. Knerr), who also created the spin-off strips Hans and Fritz and, eventually, The Captain and the Kids.

Aug. 3, 1975: Coney Island was one of the few areas of activity during that summer’s hottest days, as the “Coney Island Chamber of Commerce reported a crowd of more than 1 million people, including more than 5,000 who slept on the beaches overnight,” The Times reported. Elsewhere across the five boroughs, “New York City was a town in low gear,” as temperatures seemed to linger in the 90s without any respite in sight.

“A street-cleaning cart in New York City, where there were said to be 450 of them in 1915. Earlier that year, The Times reported on other improvements to the city’s streets, at a meeting held at Columbia University by the three borough presidents and John T. Fetherston, street-cleaning commissioner. The four men “discussed the planning, construction and maintenance of public highways and public works and street cleaning before an audience including many of the prettiest young women students in the university,” The Times reported. The audience was attentive, “but the women particularly became enthusiastic when President Marks told them of his fight for free public markets,” the report continued. Alas, that topic was not on the agenda. Boasting about the borough with the most asphalt (Brooklyn), however, was.”
