The Plaza Hotel is one of the most recognizable hotels in the world for its elegance and stunning facade, but the current form is not the original.
Another Plaza hotel, shown above, occupied the lot fro 1890 through 1905, and it too was known for its elegance. An eight story building with a grand entrance, arched windows and decorative cornices, it was a very popular architectural destination at the time.
When talks of expansion came in 1902, it was decided that the original structure could not support the weight of the 11 planned additional floors, so it was torn down so the current building could be erected.
