Guardian Angels were a vigilante group that helped to fight crime and assist the NYPD. Here they are on the NYC subway, 1980

Back in the early 1980s, when the New York City subway was a dirty, grimy, and crime-ridden place, the red-beret wearing Guardian Angels would protect commuters by establish a presence on the subway that the police could not, or would not, give. This vintage photograph shows two of the Angels protecting a subway car around 1980.
