Opening Today, 78th Whitney Biennial Showcases a Diverse Snapshot of American Art

Now in its seventy-eighth iteration, the Whitney Biennial is back, providing a snapshot of american art of all types. This year's Biennial features art from sixty-three individuals and collectives in medium ranging from painting and installation to activism and video-game design.

We don’t know, when we showcase an artist in the biennial, whether the work they make is going to be our favorite work ever, or it’s going to stand the test of time. That isn’t what the biennial is about. The biennial really is about taking a snapshot of this moment. It’s about artists trying to make something new. It’s about saying this thing, that maybe wasn’t even thought that it could be art, now counts as art.

The Whitney Biennial opens today at the Whitney Museum in the Meatpacking District, and is on exhibit until June 11th.
