Amorphophallus titanum is a large 6-foot plant which is better known as the corpse flower due to its putrid scent which is not dissimilar to rotting flesh. The plant's smell attracts bugs en-masse, allowing for its pollination over that short period or time. As the flower only blooms for 24-36 hours once-per-year, it can be easy to miss, so the New York Botanical Garden has one on display under this 24-hour live-stream.
As of June 21, 2019, there’s a new corpse flower on display in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and it’s set to bloom within two weeks. Follow along day and night as we keep watch for the first hints of it opening to reveal its famously foul fragrance, and see it for yourself here at NYBG during Brazilian Modern: The Living Art of Roberto Burle Marx. The bloom will likely only last a day or two once it starts, so don’t sleep on this rare event!
